Tips for making the divorce process less difficult

The American Psychological Association says that around half of first marriages end in divorce. This means that many California couples will go through this difficult process at some point in their lives, but there are actions and mindsets that can make it less difficult.

Family and friends may offer valuable emotional support, but in some cases, people might want to consult a therapist. Exercise can also provide stress relief since it releases mood-boosting endorphins. Getting out and doing activities with other people helps with creating new memories that do not include the soon-to-be former spouse. For some people, throwing themselves into an activity offers a valuable distraction. This could be parenting, a hobby, a career, volunteer work or anything else that helps fill the space left by the end of a marriage.

A divorce can upset many future goals and plans, and this means that it may be necessary to become comfortable with uncertainty. Patience is also necessary. Healing from a divorce takes time, but it does happen eventually. People can move on to create a happy life for themselves. Some people may find it helps to set aside anger and forgive the other person, and if they are parents, this can be critical. Finally, divorce can bring some big financial changes, and a financial adviser may help.

It is particularly important to understand the financial ramifications of property division and divorce in general. For example, some people might be determined to keep the marital home, but they should be certain they can afford the mortgage, insurance, taxes and upkeep on a single income. If the couple decides to sell the home, there may still be logistics to work out. While they are waiting for it to sell, they may need an agreement about who will pay for the expenses associated with it.
