Creating a parenting plan for children of different ages

Divorced parents in California may feel uncertain when it comes to deciding on the best way to divide custody. The primary goal should be to determine what is best for the children. The following basic guidelines are helpful and take into consideration the needs of kids at different stages during their life.

It is usually recommended that babies and toddlers have a consistent parenting schedule to avoid putting them in a state of distress. In some cases, it will be better for them to have one primary caretaker and the other co-parent visit several times a week.

All children should spend time with both parents to develop healthy bonds with them. As a child gets older, they'll likely be able to start spending more time away from the primary caretaker. When kids start school and have more structure in their schedule, they can usually better cope with spending time away from a primary caretaker. Overnight visits and full days may be scheduled away from the primary caretaker's home.

Co-parents face new challenges as their children get older and have less predictable schedules. Teens have busy schedules and social lives that should be taken into consideration when developing an effective parenting plan. Schedules will need to be adjusted as children get older and as the circumstances of the co-parents change.

One parent may feel that their ex is not flexible enough or consistently breaks agreements in the co-parenting plan. In such cases, it may be wise to talk to a lawyer about a co-parent agreement modification. The attorney could answer other questions that relate to custody and visitation and let the client know what options they have available in their circumstances. Legal counsel could even represent a client in court if it was necessary.
