Tips for successful co-parenting

California parents who have decided to part ways will need to continue working together to raise their children. While this might be challenging, professionals have some tips that parents can follow to co-parent their children in a positive manner.

Co-parenting has the best interest of the child as its source. Having both parents involved in raising the children, even after divorce, is usually best for a child's emotional health and stability. But it does take effort, dedication and commitment from both parents to make it successful. Flexibility is important. Even though parents will work out a parenting plan that includes time allotted to each parent, they should both be willing to show a degree of flexibility if the other parent, for example, wants to take the kids on an activity they will enjoy when it's not technically their day.

They should also have well-established methods of communication that do not include sending messages via their children. While it's easy for some parents to continue speaking face-to-face or over the phone, others prefer email, texts or one of the many apps available. Additionally, when speaking about the other parent, parents should always try to maintain a positive tone and outlook, praising their strengths as a parent instead of criticizing them in front of the children. Parents should also show a unified front when making decisions about their children's lives as this helps provide them with stability. When apart, parents can share special moments with the other parent through photos or messages so that the other parent does not feel as if they are missing out on their child's life.

Establishing a clear parenting plan is an important step in successful co-parenting. During this process, parents may speak with a lawyer about family law. The lawyer may provide guidance based on experience, explain any legislation that parents do not understand and represent their client in negotiations.
