Divorce can be difficult on children

When California parents get a divorce, it can be a difficult time for their children, whether they are in grade school or in kindergarten. They often experience a variety of emotions, and sometimes they feel that they are the reason that their parents decided to end their marriage. Whether their parents were awarded joint physical custody by the court or came up with a parenting plan on their own, the children will be affected, but there are a few coping methods that they might want to know.

At the outset, children should never take sides with one parent over the other. They need to know that, even if the parents harbor ill will towards each other, they still love their children unconditionally, and they know that their children in most cases were definitely not the catalyst for the divorce. Children should have one-on-one time with each parent and, when circumstances permit, they should be able to spend holidays and other events with both of them at the same time.

It is always good for children of divorced parents to have people to talk to when they are feeling down. This could be a classmate, a counselor, or the parents themselves. They should be free to express their feelings and not get embarrassed if they feel grief that their parents are no longer together and in most cases will never reunite.

When it is possible, parents who are going through a divorce may want to negotiate an agreement that provides for ample parenting time for both of them. They might want to have the help of their respective family law attorneys when doing so.
